Sunday with Michael and Myrna

At the outset, as I write this blog post, I'm enjoying watching and listening to Burt Bacharach's Best music on PBS. Wow, what a Sunday treat, with some of the incredible, legendary artists like Dionne Warwick, Tom Jones, Herb Alpert, the Carpenters, etc. singing Bacharach's original compositions! It feels so good, and what a relief, listening to these songs that have become classic. They're aptly referred to as oldies but goodies.

Good Sunday, everyone! Thank God, Andrea is gone. She's been gone since yesterday morning with no major damages, except for minor flash floods in some areas in Hampton Roads. Other than that we're doing fine. So glad and thankful to see the sun shining brightly over Hampton Roads, and elsewhere, again!

Sunday morning. Time to go to church and worship. That's what Rose, Freny and I did. Rev. Fr. David, our pastor at St. Paul's Catholic, officiated the Mass, with seminarian Marton Lamont, who did the homily. After Mass, we dined out with our friends Michael and Myrna at a nearby restaurant. Check out these photos, guys. Aren't we cool?

Btw, one thing to note here. You know, dear folks and friends, when we were at the parking lot in front of the restaurant in Portsmouth, we found out that it wasn't open yet because we're quite early for luncheon. Mind you, we're the very first diners today! Anyway, we waited outside and as we were waiting for it to open at 11:00 o'clock this morning, we took the pictures above. Once the restaurant opened, the employees were still busy cooking and preparing, and displaying the dishes that they've cooked so far. First, we started with our drinks. Then, we're ready to "attack" the enemies...hot food! Yummy!

Well, this is all for now, my dear folks and friends. Until next time around. Take care and have a wonderful day, everyone! As always, I pray, "May God bless us and keep us all safe from harm!"-chris a. quilpa, 06 June 2013

No One Can Stop You Now,* Graduates of 2013

To those anticipating their Graduation Day this week or next, congratulations and best wishes. Rejoice and celebrate, Class of 2013! And for those who have already had their 2013 Graduation Day, here's wishing you all the best in your future endeavors.

Congratulations and thanks are due also to all the teachers, mentors, instructors, professors and parents who have helped inculcate knowledge, skills and values, and who have inspired you to be whatever you want to be in life. Their leadership, professionalism, service, sacrifices, devotion and love have, undoubtedly, served as your role models in life.

As a former teacher/instructor and now parent of two young adult children who have had their graduation days (from elementary to college), I am proud of you, graduates of 2013.

I am very sure you and your caring-loving parents, relations, teachers and friends have been excited for and proud of what you have achieved so far in life.

You have done a gradual and incredible change to improve yourselves. You have challenged yourselves that you can do better. And you did it, one struggle after another, one hurdle at a time, one mistake and correction leading to success.

You have taken the risks, endured pressures from peers, parents, teachers, benchmarks, exams, Standards of Learning tests and more. But in the end, you emerged winners, because you have seen that spark of light leading you in the right direction, the straight path to life.

You found a meaning and purpose in your life, because you've tasted success and victory, after those moments that tempted you to give up. Now you have a reason to smile, rejoice and celebrate: You are a winner!

Graduation Day is another milestone in your life. However, it is just the beginning of a wonderful, challenging, and hopefully, successful life ahead of you. Now is the time to start to focus on the next chapter of your life.

What's next? Pursuing higher education? Finding a job? Taking a break for a while to ponder what to do next? Joining the military? That's up to you, graduate. Nothing is impossible, and no one can prevent you from going after your dream for as long as you're alive and well and have set sight on your bright future. No one can stop you now.

Remember that what you do in the future can impact your life, your family and the world at large. You are the catalysts of changes and reforms. The world needs you, is waiting for you to make it better, safer and more peaceful.

Adventurous, creative, imaginative and innovative as you are, you are our future.

Congratulations and best wishes!

Feeling the Pressures of Andrea

Good Friday, everyone! TGIF! Thank God, It's Friday! Btw, how are we doing nowadays? How's the weather in your area? Nice? Absolutely gorgeous? Beautiful? Just perfect? Mild? Breezy? Windy? Sunny? Warm? Hot? Rainy and wet? Whatever it is, let's be thankful that we're alive and well. Me? I'm hanging in there. Thank you, Almighty God!

It's wet and raining over here in Hampton Roads at this time. Will it rain the whole day today? Hopefully and prayerfully, it will stop in time, and that the weather remains calm and not too windy. Local meteorologists are forecasting for possible tornadoes...That's why tornado watch/tropical storm warning is in effect in our region, and elsewhere, at this time. Hopefully, it will be lifted soon. And that the sun shines through...

Right now, we're feeling the pressures of Andrea, the first tropical storm hitting the East Coast, particularly in the eastern seaboard. It made landfall in the Florida coast yesterday and it's moving towards us in the northeastern part like the Carolinas (South and North) and Hampton Roads, Virginia. Per CNN and weather reports, Andrea is waning but dumping heavy rain across East Coast. That means that we're anticipating flash floods, especially in low-lying areas. The National Weather Service warns drivers to  never drive through flooded roadways. The Coast Guard also warns boaters to be off the water during this time.Well, we hope and pray that Andrea claims no lives and major damages as it approaches (and passes by) Hampton Roads. Her path continues to be heading up north. (As I continue writing this blog post, it stopped raining, for a while, and it's calm. Then, it continued raining again.) There are already reports of power outages, here and there, and in neighboring states like South Carolina. Hopefully, power will be restored in those areas sooner. And that rain will stop and go away...Partial (to full) clearing on the way, huh? That's right, we're looking forward to a beautiful, wonderful weekend! Let's stay safe, everyone!

Trying to capture the weather situation in our area, I took the photos (embedded here below) from my front door and back. They were taken before and after 10:00 o'clock this morning. As you may see, a couple of the photos here were taken while I was also watching TV, particularly on NBC and its local affiliate TV station WAVY. FYI, there's this yearly event known as Harborfest in Norfolk that's supposed to take place starting today. But with what I learned from the local news, the Parade of Sail was cancelled due to Andrea. However, ships participating will be open to the public tomorrow, Saturday, per local news report. I believe there are already a number of ships from other countries that have arrived and are sailing along the Elizabeth River in connection with this "nautical" event. I learned there are concerts cancelled, and other festivals rescheduled. On the other hand, another activity that I'm aware of this weekend, particularly tomorrow, Saturday, is the holding of Commencement Exercises or Graduation Day for a couple of high schools in our area. Others, I learned, will have theirs next Saturday, especially in the Peninsula area. How did I know about this? Well, my wife Freny is a high school teacher (teaching Chemistry) in one of the public high schools in Hampton Roads, and she said days ago that the Graduation Day in their school will take place next Saturday, June 15. Right now, they're busy administering the final exams to their students, she said.

Well, this is all for now. Thank you for your time, folks and friends. Until next time around. Take care, stay safe, and have a wonderful weekend, everyone! May God bless us all always!-chris a. quilpa, 07 June 2013

Of Outdoor Stroll, and Road Trip with YT

Good Wednesday, everyone! Hope you're doing great. Thank God, we're alive and well.

Just finished my short stroll around the neighborhood two hours ago, as I start writing this blog post. With plenty of sunshine all over Hampton Roads, it's irresistible not to be outdoor, even for 30 minutes to an hour, especially during this time of the year when the weather is mild and little warm. It's perfect to be outdoor, stretching out, doing physical conditioning, like walking at your own pace, besides breathing fresh air and getting some vitamin D from the morning sun, and meeting fellow resident-walkers or joggers along the way. That is if you're lucky. I was...happy and thankful, too.

Just like this morning, while walking along pedestrian/bike lane on the main road in our community, I came across Gladys and Josepha, who were accompanying their grandchildren to school. (I've mentioned the two middle-aged women in my older blog post, sometime last year, if I'm not mistaken.) As usual, we exchanged greetings and pleasantries. They're glad to see me and I was, too. I asked them how long do they still have school, as I looked on the kids. One of the kids answered that they have until next week, next Friday. Then, we each did go on different direction...Gladys and Josepha walked along with their grand children to their school, and I continued with my stroll.

I got back home at about ten thirty this morning, feeling sore on both knees, and tired, and experiencing back spasms. Actually, I was already feeling sore, after about thirty minutes of walking. Well, it's probably because I haven't had this sort of exercise or physical conditioning for a while. But, I am okay. I feel good, with manageable pain, I think, mostly on my knees and lower back, as I've said. Thankfully, I've managed to be back home and to bring our trash bin outside, by the curbside, ready for the trash collector/s tomorrow.

Now it's breakfast, or brunch, time, after a few minutes of rest or cooling period! So what did we have? Just a bowl of Cheerios with organic milk, and a piece of banana. That's it. Plain and simple. And later on, after an hour, while I continued my blogging, a piece of pear fruit. And water. Bottled Dasani "purified" water. Continued with my blog...thinking what topic to talk about next...I know now...My dear folks and friends, wanna come along with me? Ready? Let's go...

Yesterday, after daughter Tintin left for D-ville at 1 p.m. (and thank God, she arrived there safely when she called us late afternoon), I went on a "road trip" to the West Coast. (Or I would say, re-visited the West, specifically California...here I come again! Btw, I came from there, specifically in the Silicon Valley where revisited my relatives, folks, friends, with my family, last year. Miss the West Coast!) You're kidding, you say. Well, I did! Not with my wife Freny or a family member. But with a French traveler, I think! With a high definition camera. On YouTube, that is! That's right, I went on a road trip to the West Coast via those "travel" videos on YouTube! And, I enjoyed it, with those awesome scenic views along the way! They're incredibly beautiful! What a wonderful experience! You see, the power of the Internet continues to amaze me, specifically the incredible YouTube and Google, and Blogger, and Facebook, etc. While trying to live and learn in a digital, wired world, I'm amazed at what I find each day, just being connected to the 'Net. Thanks, YouTube! And thanks a lot to the video makers/uploaders.

So, my dear folks and friends, I'm sure you want to know where I went yesterday, what I saw and encountered, huh? Let's go to YouTube and find out who the traveler I was with, okay? What...I forgot the name. Let me think...Recall...I think I remember now...TylerProject, yes! Let's go to YouTube and type TylerProject. Eureka! Here are the videos...Btw, here's my Disclaimer: No copyright infringement intended. I don't own the videos. They're from YouTube. So, I'd like to say, Thank you, YouTube and TylerProject, the uploader of the videos embedded here on my blog post. TylerProject, you did a great job! Kudos and more traveling! Just to let you know, I enjoyed "traveling" with you! Thanks a lot for bringing me to these awesome places, via your videos!
Well, this is all for now. I hope you had fun and a good time, my dear folks and friends. Happy traveling! Until next time around. Take care and have a wonderful day, everyone! May God bless us and keep us all safe from harm always!-chris a. quilpa, 05 June 2013

Tintin Off to D-ville Today (with Photos)

Hi, everyone! Good day to us all! How are we doing so far today? Thank God that we're alive and well.

Wow, what a gorgeous weather we have over here in Hampton Roads today! Lots of sunshine all around, with mild weather, cool breeze, temperature in the mid to upper 70s! Perfect time to enjoy outdoor!

At about 1:00 p.m. today, Tuesday, my daughter Tintin left 757 for D-ville, after spending weekend/days with us. She was planning to go back Monday but, because it was raining in our area yesterday, she decided to just go today. (Usually, when she's home every other weekend, because of her commitment as a pianist in one of the churches in a neighboring city, she goes back to D-ville in the afternoon of Sunday, after we have had lunch in one of the restaurants nearby.)

Now, while she was about to leave us today, I went upstairs, grabbed my camera and took the following photos. Here they are...

Photos (c) 2013 by Chris Quilpa

Well, I do hope you have had a good time. We did. On the other hand, here's praying and wishing for Tintin a safe road trip to and arrival in D-ville! (FYI: It takes 3 to 3 1/2 hours drive to get there.) God bless her and keep her safe from harm! Again, thanks Tintin for The National D-Day Memorial (Evolution of an Idea) book (by Byron Dickson, Architect) and ball caps you gave me and your Mom. She bought them when she visited Bedford weeks ago, she said. Thank you, Tintin, for being thoughtful and kind. Love ya, kid!

That's all I have to say right now. Until next time around, my dear folks and friends. Carpe diem! Take care and have a wonderful, peaceful day, everyone! As always, I pray, "May God bless us always!"-chris a. quilpa, 04 June 2013

Weekend At Home with Tintin

Good Sunday, everyone! Thank God, we're here...blogging again. Were glad and thankful to be alive and well!

Daughter Tintin has been with us this weekend. We're so thankful and delighted to see her home again. As you go on reading my blog post, you'll see the embedded photos of mine (taken today, Sunday, and yesterday) with Tintin with us.

                              Photos (c) 2013 by Chris A. Quilpa
This time, she came from C-ville, she said, where she spent a day and night with her friends and fellow college advisers. They had a meeting there Friday, she said. Normally, her trip home usually originates from D-ville each time she comes home every other weekend when she's scheduled to play piano Sunday in one of the Christian churches in Norfolk. Then, after church worship and lunch, she goes back to D-ville in the afternoon. Btw, we usually dine out in one of the eateries or restaurants nearby or neighboring city, after church. That's basically the case each time she's home on weekends.

This "Corpus Christi" Sunday, we participated in the 9:30 a.m. Mass at our parish, St. Paul's Catholic where Reverend Fr. David, our pastor, celebrated the Liturgy with us. As volunteer church "Eucharistic Ministers," Freny and I distributed the Host or the consecrated Bread as Body of Christ to our fellow parishioners. (We were scheduled today.) We didn't wait for the final blessings of Fr. David, after the Holy Communion, because of Tintin's commitment, the one I mentioned above. Hence, we slowly inched our way out of St. Paul's, for the next church worship service in Norfolk, leaving fellow parishioners behind and probably wondering, too, about our early departure.

We arrived at our next destination five minutes before the start of the worship service. As usual, Tintin immediately heads to where the piano is and, momentarily, she starts playing the prelude. Silence is then observed. Noticeably, at this church, majority of the members attending are like over 50 years old. Regular attendees number about twenty to thirty. There may be more churchgoers, on special occasion or holiday, like Christmas, you know. However, one peculiar characteristic of the worship service, especially the first part of it, is that there's this sort of welcoming "meet and greet" of everybody in the sanctuary. That was cool! There's that kind of "feel good" atmosphere inside. I don't know about you, folks and friends, if you have had attended two different church worship services like we have had...one Catholic and the other Protestant. No matter what, we worship the same one God, our Almighty Creator-Heavenly Father, anyway. You see, with the freedom of religion we exercise as freedom-loving people, living in a free country, like the U.S., it doesn't matter what our belief is as long as we are that accepting, welcoming, and understanding of others.

Driving back to our area, from Norfolk, after the worship service, we decided to have lunch at Captain D's in Chesapeake. We haven't been there for a while and we miss their fish and fries and coleslaw and hush puppies? And their garden salad and newly-brewed sweet iced tea. As usual, we ordered that 12-piece family pack menu, for less than $30. That's good for four diners. At times, we still bring home left-over food just like today, for dinner/supper.

Back home, after lunch, I felt kind of tired. Back spasms kicking in. As soon as I changed gear or clothes, I went to bed and stretched my bad back. That's why I didn't go with Freny and Tintin to T-Mobile office for Tintin's upgrade of her mobile phone. (She wasn't with us last week when we did change our phones.) FWI: I did mention in my previous blog post that we did have an upgrade with our family plan mobile phones, to smart phones when Andrew was here last weekend. What's that? Keeping up with technology, huh? Freny and Andrew were quick to say, "We have to..." Me? Just trying to learn...you know me, my dear folks and friends. I kind of prefer just simple gadget as long as it serves its purpose. I don't want complicated stuff. No, don't get me wrong. But, of course, I want to learn new things but, come on, if it's taking much of my time to figure it out, forget it! Admittedly, I'm a slow learner with regards to these things, especially involving mobile tech devices, and computer or internet technology in general. But I'm willing to learn, especially if there's someone who's patient enough to show us, step by step.

Note that I did write this blog post (while in our backyard patio/porch) after almost two hours resting in bed. I'm doing fine, btw. Now, I'm about to wrap this up. Thanks, folks and friends, for keeping me company.

Well, this is all for now. Until next time around. Take care and have a nice day, everyone! As always, I pray, "May God bless us and keep us all safe from harm!"-chris a. quilpa, 02 June 2013

On the First of June: Thanksgiving & Recollections

Hi, everyone! Good Saturday to all of us! It's the First of June, thank God; we're alive and well. [But, before I proceed, I'm saddened by the latest news that tornadoes hit Oklahoma again yesterday, with five dead (per latest news reports) and hundreds with their homes, properties destroyed. My thoughts and prayers for all the victims and their families, and those affected by the deadly twisters.]

Whew, it's getting warmer and warmer all over US, though it's not summer yet! There's plenty of sunshine everywhere...And with barometric pressure rising each time checked, heat and humidity are also felt, especially when you're doing outdoor activities, i.e., gardening or stretching or doing simple physical conditioning. It appears that summer has (unofficially) arrived in the East Coast, specifically here in Hampton Roads, undoubtedly! Just by being there outside under the heat of the sun at noontime, you'll get sunburn in minutes! Yes, that's how intense the heat is, outside! Forecast High temp for today, in our area, is low 90s Fahrenheit. The rest of the coming days will be like today, hot and humid, no signs of rain showers in sight.

Thank God, our A/C unit is functioning efficiently and effectively. As you know, it's only less than a year old, installed by our friend Chris B from neighboring city. Thanks Chris B for your help. (Though we only see him periodically, he's always there available, each time I call him if I have heater-A/C problem.) Likewise, Special Thanks to  our special friend Mike who's always ready to lend me a hand each time we encounter problems about this and that at home. Just like last time, he fixed something electrical in one of our restrooms  upstairs. And yesterday afternoon, past five, he and his wife Myrna came over while I was in our backyard patio/deck chilling out or relaxing. Mike was so kind and generous enough to give us their spare edger (electric) that he said he's no longer using but still works. Lending a hand to my wife Freny and sis-in-law Rose, he did yard work for us, while his wife Myrna and I engaged in regular/friendly talk. Btw, we both each have sort of physical/health problems that prevent or limit our ability to do hard labor or manual work that involves lifting or carrying, or strenuous activity. To those of you who have been reading my blog posts regularly, you know about my physical problem/s.

You see, my dear folks and friends, deep within me I feel bad for not able to helping them, specially my wife Freny who does the lawn-mowing and yard work, most of the time, or doing such type of work anymore, which I used to, for years before. Back in the days, I've been doing odd jobs and manual work. But now, it's different. That's why I retired early with permanent disability from the US Navy. Mind you, while working in busy naval hospitals/clinics, I've enjoyed doing portable X-rays back then. Doing portable X-rays here and there was kind of my exercise, physically. I always bring extra T-shirt for me because I sweat a lot, each time I finished a task. Believe me when I say, I loved where the action was, doing this and that with my portable X-ray machine. Name every department in the hospital where there's a volume of patients in and out, I've been there...ER, OR, Orthopedic, ICU, NICU, PACU, Labor and Delivery, Morgue, etc.

Then came those invasive procedures on my lower back/spine. Seven succeeding months. On pain medications. On convalescent leave, each procedure done. Limited duty followed. Admin work. Checking in patients, answering phone calls. Doing staff-personnel training records, assigning/scheduling staff for training certification updates, and other hospital requirements, etc. And the use of wooden cane, immobilizing devices/brace on my waist, and those rehabilitation/physical therapies and acupuncture sessions. The days and months of feeling down, agitated, depressed, frustrated, helpless and hapless, and hopeless...Going nuts...Future on hold, uncertain. Plans, no more. Retirement imminent, inevitable...Hello, Chris! Wake up! You're now in 2013, on the First (day) of June, two days after you celebrated your 60th, with Freny, with good food and good friends Mike and Myrna, and Baby Emily at Red Lobster's. You see, my dear folks and friends, how powerful our brain is when we're still alive and active, and mentally healthy? We remember, we forget...Memories of our life experiences...

When it comes to the month of June, one thing comes to mind, especially on its last two days. Why? It reminds me of my last days as a "Sailor" or serviceman. Yes, it will be eight years hence, since I've retired  with permanent disability, after having served in the U.S. Navy honorably and proudly for 20 years. I'm grateful for the U.S. Navy that I was able to realize my dream or ambition here in the U.S. Yes, how much I've wanted to enlist/join the U.S. Navy when I graduated from high school in the Philippines. But it didn't happen then, when we still had the Subic Naval Base in Olongapo, RP (Republic of the Philippines). Instead, I went to college and graduated in 1977, then immigrated here with my younger siblings in 1983. On the other hand, that dream of mine  wasn't forgotten at all. In fact, it laid dormant somewhere in my head, until it came back to haunt me. I, therefore, enlisted in the U.S. Navy, via the delayed entry program, in 1985, two years after working one job after another in the Silicon Valley.

Nostalgia, it's hard to overcome, at times. Memories come and go...Yes, that was then. This is now... Me, trying to live in and enjoying the present moment, with my Faith, family, folks, and friends, one day at a time; and having learned to let go (of things, thoughts, ideas that may seem important but they're not) and to move/go on...until the end of time here on Earth.

Well, this is all for now, my dear folks and friends. I do hope I didn't bore you to death. Anyway, until next time around. Thank you for hanging in there and keeping me company. Take care and have a wonderful weekend, everyone! As always, I pray, "May God bless us and keep us safe from harm always!"-chris a. quilpa, 01 June 2013
